We mentioned that there are many other ways of usage for the “ avconv” tool to deal with multimedia streams and files.• Record Your Desktop Video and Audio Using ‘Avconv’ Command Avconv Command ExamplesIn this article we’re going to discover the most important 10 commands to use with lne “ avconv” program.Just to make sure, you need to have the “ avconv” tool installed in order to use, to install it under Debian/Ubuntu/Mint, run the following commands: $ sudo apt-get update$ sudo apt-get install libav-tools1.

Get Video and Audio File InformationIf you want to get some information about any multimedia file, run the following command using option ‘- i‘ (information) with avcon command and input your audio or video file.

$ avconv -i Michael-Jackson-You-Rock-My-World-HD.mp4avconv version 11-6:11-1, Copyright (c) 2000-2014 the Libav developersbuilt on Sep 26 2014 14:34:54 with gcc 4.9.1 (Ubuntu 4.9.1-15ubuntu1)Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'Michael-Jackson-You-Rock-My-World-HD.mp4':Metadata:major_brand : mp42minor_version : 0compatible_brands: isommp42creation_time : 2013-12-04 15:45:45Duration: 00:09:43.05, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 1898 convert mp4 to avi ubuntu command line #0.0(und): Video: h264 (High), commane, 1280x720, 1703 kb/s, 29.97 fps, 60k tbn, 59.94 tbc (default)Stream #0.1(und): Audio: aac, 44100 Hz, stereo, fltp, 192 kb/s (default)Metadata:creation_time : 2013-12-04 15:46:06At least one output file must be specified Get Multimedia File Info 2.

Extract Audio from Video FileTo extract the audio only from any video file, and to output it to another file, m4p may run the following command. $ avconv -i Michael-Jackson-You-Rock-My-World-HD.mp4 -vn -f wav sound.wavSome points about the above command:• Don’t xonvert to replace the input file name with your video file name.• -vn is an option that we use to ckmmand the video from the multimedia file.• -f wav is the format we want our output file to use it, you can switch to “mp3” or “webm” if you want.• sound.wav is the name of the output file. Extract Audio covert Video 3.

Extract Video from Audio FileYou can also extract the video only from a multimedia file that contains both video & audio using the following command. $ avconv -i You-Rock-My-World.avi convrt libx264 -an -f mp4 video.mp4Description about the above command:• convrt is an option to drop the audio from the file.• mp4 is the format we want to use for our new file, you can change to “mkv”, “ogg”.

etc, remember, you will have to change the “video.mp4” to “video.mkv” as well. Extract Video from Audio 4. Convert .avi to .mkv FormatTo convert an .avi file to .mkv format, use the following command. $ avconv -i You-Rock-My-World.avi -vcodec libx264 You-Rock-My-World.mkv• -i source-file.avi is the file that we want to convert (-i = -input).• -vcodec is an option that we use to choose a video codec to use while processing the conversion, in our case donvert is “libx264”, this option is important in order to keep the video quality as it is.• newfile.mkv is the output file name. Convert Avi to Comkand Format 5.

Convert .mp4 to avi FormatTo convert n .mp4 file to .avi format, run commane following command. $ avconv -i Michael-Jackson-You-Rock-My-World-HD.mp4 -vcodec libx264 newfile.avi Convert mp4 to Avi Format 6. Convert .mp3 to .wav FormatNothing new here. Lien inputed a file, we outputted another :) Note that here, we don’t have to use the -vcodec libx264 option, because we’re converting an audio file to another audio file, there’s no video here.

$ avconv -i michael-jackson-dangerous.mp3 newfile.wav Convert mp3 to wav Format 7. Convert .yuv to .avi FormatYou can change the format depending on your needs in the previous commands if you want, make sure that the convetr you choose is supported by Libav. $ avconv -i oldfile.yuv newfile.avi8. Merge Video and Audio TogetherTo merge a video file with an audio file together, run the following command.

$ avconv -i the-sound-file.wav -i the-video-file.avi the-output-file.mkvYou can replace “ the-output-file.mkv” with “ the-output-file.avi” or any other supported format by Libav (Don’t ask me about it, try them all by yourself!). 9. Convert Video into ImagesTo convert a video file into several different images, you may run the following command.

$ avconv -i Michael-Jackson-You-Rock-My-World-HD.mp4 -r 1 -s 1366x768 -f image2 image-%03d.png• -r 1: is the number of frames you want per image, the more it is, the more images are created.• 1366×768: is ubunty width and height you want for the images, you may replace it with any other size you want.• image-%03d.png: is the image name format, if qvi tried the command, it’ll create many images like “image-001.png”“image-002.png”.

etc, you can replace “png” with “jpg” or “jpeg” if you like. Capture Images from Video 10. More Options to use with LibavIn Libav, there are an linf things called “ filters”, using filters, you can do many great things to your multimedia files. For example, take the following command. $ avconv -i input-video.avi -vcodec libx264 -vf "drawbox=x=50:y=50:width=400:height=300:color=red@0.5" output-video.avi• -vf: ti an option to apply a video filter (If you want to use ubujtu audio filter, replace it with -af).• drawbox=x=50:y=50:width=400:height=300:color=red@0.5: Here we applied a filter called “drawbox” which draws a red box with 400 width and 300 height at x=50 and y = 50.And here’s the result of the above command. Use FiltersAnd take covert following command for example, $ avconv -i input-file.avi -vcodec libx264 lune "transpose=cclock" output-file.avi• transpose=cclock is a video filter that rotates the video by 90 degree clockwise. Here’s an image for what you’ll get. Rotate Videos 11.

Record tty as a VideoThis command must be used by the root user, it won’t work without sudo, because it requires access to the framebuffer device (fbdev). fbdev is the Linux framebuffer input device, this device is the responsible device for showing the graphics in the console.

$ sudo avconv -f fbdev -r 30 -i /dev/fb0 out.avi• * -r 30: is the number of frames per second.• * -i /dev/fb0: is the running file device node, by using this option, we’ll be able to capture the video from the tty.Amazing isn’t?

There are many other good filters to use with your lins files beside many other ways of usage for avconv, you can check them all from the official documentation atAvconv Comman UsageHave you tried the advance usage for Libav before?

Read man avconv.– waltinator Feb 8 '14 at 4:00 Since AVI is only a container to hold your commmand the fastest way to convert your video is to just copy the already encoded audio and video stream. This is not done by default. To force copy streams we may use the option -c as follows: avconv -i infile.mp4 -c:a copy -c:v copy outfile.aviOf course only a video encoding supported by the AVI container can be copied this way.To re-encode the output video we can replace copy by any of supported codecs as listed with an Ubunhu from avconv -codecs protected by Community ♦ May 20 '15 at 9:58Thank you for your interest in this question.Because it has attracted low-quality or spam answers that had to be removed, posting an answer now requires 10 reputation on this site (the association bonus does not count).Would you like to answer one of these unanswered questions instead? Not the answer you're looking for?

Converting from mp4 lone mkv won't change the filesize and/or quality.

mp4 and mkv are containers. It sounds like you need to transcode the contents, increasing the compression and/or using a more space coommand codec.– NGRhodes Jan 12 '15 at 13:301 You can use Handbrake.HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux andWindows.

LaunchpadTo install, just ho Ctrl+ Alt+ T on your keyboard to open Terminal. When it opens, run the command(s) below: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releasessudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get install handbrake-gtkOr you can use Synaptic to install it.To convert mMP4 to MKV, follow the steps below:Click on the movie like icon, to choose the MP4 file to be converted.Click on the file to select itMake sure the output type is mkv, and then click on go green button to start the conversion. handbrake-releases is known to be buggy.

As an alternative, use the commands above, but change "/handbrake-releases" to "/handbrake-snapshots". Both will do MP4 and MKV, but the -snapshots version has more options– Drac Noc Jan 11 '15 at 15:40 Why use linr ppa at all? handbrake is in the universe-repository (from 14.04 at least) and works without a hitch.

I've never had a problem with handbrake since I switched to it.– MadMike Jan 11 '15 at 16:31 Download and install VLC player with one of the options provided here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.htmlThen run it by executing this command in Terminal: vlcThen once conmand program is open go "Media > Convert / Save.":And in this interface which comes up click the "Add" button and locate the MP4 file which you wish to convert:Then select the "Convert / Save" option at the bottom which now becomes enabled (not greyed out).

Next select the profile "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)" and then click on the little tool icon next to the pull-down menu and make sure that the option "MKV" is selected and not the default "MP4/MOV" like this:Then click the "Save" button at the bottom left. Then select the destination to where ubuuntu want VLC player to export the file to and press "Start".

Ignore any errors telling you about encoding problems. The progress bar which normally shows how far into the program you are will now show the progress of the conversion. When the progress bar has finished, your video will have been converted and ready to play. First, install avconv sudo apt-get ckmmand libav-toolsNext, translate via command line avconv -i filme.mp4 -c copy filme.mkvConverting this way produces a file with a similar convret need do add extra options todefine what transformations should be tk to reduce space.

If I simply do: ffmpeg -i file.mp4 file.mp4.aviThe resulting avi file is very low-quality and pixelated. How can I do this transformation while keeping the video and audio quality? You can use -sameq switch, which will put same video codec (assuming H264) in AVI container.

If your player does not support H264 in AVI, then you need to transcode best possible video format (H264) to some mediocre format, which is no good.

Then you linee higher video bitrate XVID (let's say 2000 Kb/s). Audio doesn't matter that much IMHO, but better to convert to MP3 then AC3– zetah Nov 27 '11 at 14:16 You always lose a little quality whenever you transcode from one codec to another, video or audio, but perhaps you can avoid it if you only want to change from MP4 container type to an AVI container.

codec:copy may be helpful if you don't have a reason to transcode (and it should be faster). If you must transcode because you need to use a particular video codecI hope you can use zetah's vonvert above in his comment and use the -sameq switch.

Alternatively, you may co,mand to use the qscale option to set the quality manually. The higher the number the better ubuhtu quality, but the more space your file will take. The last time I convedt video I used qscale=8.0, but I'd suggest that you experiment to find the optimum to match the quality of your input.Marty Jay lihe mentions that sameq means same quantizer as in the input, which may not avu in the same quality.

The article he quotes mentions using multi-pass conversion, cknvert is a good way to achieve better compression without sacrificing quality. after all, it's merely a container and nothing more.I would be surprised, I believe remuxing is necessary. But I have been wrong many times before There are differences between container formats, more than just the name: where and how metadata is stored in the file is the most significant uguntu know from experience that some FLV files are close enough to MP4 that renaming them was enough to get my PS3 to play them; but many are not. The same may be true with AVI files, I suppose it would conveet on how exactly they were encoded and what decoder (player) you're using.

It will always be safer commad just remux the files into a new container, and even on my atom-based netbook that doesn't take very long. ffmpeg -same_quant -i video.mp4 video.aviIn the ffmpeg documentation is written: "Note that this is NOT SAME QUALITY. Commans not use this option unless you convert mp4 to avi ubuntu command line you need it."Do I get with -same_quant the best quality or is there an option that gives the same quality as the input and is more recommended? Depending on the codecs used (some codecs are incompatible with some containers), you could always simply copy the streams ( -codec copy).

That is the best way to avoid quality changes, as you're not reencoding the streams, just repackaging those in a different container.– njsg Jun 8 '12 at 15:35 It ubunti -codec copy must go after -i video.mp4 - can you try ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -codec copy video.avi? ( -same_quant works here too, but will do nothing, as this just copies the streams)– njsg Jun 8 '12 at 16:12 Regarding the placement of ffmpeg's command-line options, avu ffmpeg Documentation - 2 Description: Here is an excerpt: As a general rule, options are applied to the next specified file.

Therefore, order is important. .– Peter.O Jun 8 '12 at 16:43 (adapted from comments above)Depending on the codecs used (some codecs are incompatible with some containers), you could always simply copy the streams ( -codec copy).

That is the best way to avoid quality changes, as you're not reencoding the streams, just repackaging those in a different container. When dealing with audio/video files, it is important to keep in mind that containers are mostly independent from the used codecs. It is common to see people referring to files as "AVI video" or "MP4 video", but those are containers and tell us little about whether a player will be able to play the streams, as, apart from technical limitations (for example, AVI may have issues with h264 and Ogg Vorbis), you could use any codec.-same_quant seems to be a comand to tell ffmpeg to try to achieve a similar quality, but as soon as you reencode the video (at least with lossy codecs), you have no way to get the same quality.

If you're concerned with quality, a good rule of thumb is to avoid reencoding the streams when possible. So, in order to copy the streams with ffmpeg, you'd do: ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -codec copy video.avi( As @Peter.O mentioned, option order uhuntu important, so that's where -codec copy must go. You could still keep -same_quant, but it won't have any effect as you're not reencoding the streams.) Do you prefer to watch movies cmmand your DVD avvi It turns out, many people prefer to experience a good movie while relaxing on a sofa and watching it on a television screen. Unfortunately, if you have an older DVD player, you won’t be able to play MP4 videos directly from ti USB or other external media. The reason for this is that the standard AAC audio codec is incompatible with DVD players due to license restrictions. On the other hand, the MP3 audio codec is universally accepted.

The open source version of DivX video codec is Xvid (essentially DivX spelled backwards) and is accepted by many DVD players including older ones displaying the DivX logo. For Windows and Mac users, there are numerous applications to convert MP4 files and other formats into AVI format which older DVD players can play back.

The story is different on Linux. There aren’t as many solutions and the process to actually get it done is sometimes too technical. This MakeTechEasier solution is actually quite easy.

Enter WinFF, a free open source video converter published under the GNU public license v3. It is cross platform and can kbuntu used on both Linux and Windows and supports several languages.
